National Gallery
The National Gallery started with a mere 38 paintings from John Julius Angerstein, which were initially on display at his house in Pall Mall. These paintings were to form the core of a new national collection for all to enjoy. In 1831 Parliament agreed to construct a new building for the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square, which was considered to be the innermost centre of London.
There are many reasons to visit The National Gallery not only because of their amazing collection of over 2,300 paintings but because every painting tells us a story. For those with plenty of time to spare The Gallery offers the opportunity to learn about art and paintings in depth and for those who don’t, it offers a unique opportunity to take a few moments to escape from the city and relax into a painting. See priceless works of art for free from some of the worlds most famous artists including Gainsborough, Rubens, Rembrandt, van Gogh, Titian, Monet and Cezanne to name a few.
